Rock n' Roll music memorabilia
There are lots of exciting aspects of staying at the Hardrock Hotel Amsterdam American. One that is a favorite among diehard music fans is the opportunity to get an up-close look at some of the most intriguing and rare artifacts from the music industry.
Prepare to have your breath taken away by the walth and breath of the rock n' roll music memorabilia collection, which is a staple of the décor at every Hard Rock property. Here are a few of our favorites:
-
Elton John's teal metallic oxford shoes, owned and worn by Elton John. He performed at Concertgebouw in Amsterdam in 1979. This concert was most notable for the fact that he opted out of wearing his typical flashy stage costumes that people had to come to expect. According to his photographer, Barry Shultz: “Instead, it was just a talented man and in a floppy hat and sweatshirt at the piano.”
-
Prince's purple coat. Prince gave many surprise concerts in Amsterdam: 2011 at Melkweg, 2013 at the Paradiso, as well as a performance at the Ziggo Dome in 2014.
-
Jimi Hendrix' jacket. Jimi Hendrix Experience visited Amsterdam in March of 1967. They stayed at the Hotel Schiller in Rembrandt Square and recorded an appearance on the tv show Fan Club while in Amsterdam. This custom made jacket was owned and worn by Jimi in 1969.
-
Aretha Franklin's dress. In May 1968, Aretha was in her prime when she performed in Amsterdam during her first tour abroad. She was there to promote her new album, Lady Soul, after switching to Atlantic Records. Aretha and the Sweet Inspirations, her backup singers, were placed on a stage crowded with musicians and fans with little security down front at the city's famous Concertgebouw. There, she performed for a near-hysterical audience that had no problem throwing what appear to be flower petals in her face as she sang. All Aretha had to control the massive crowd was the force of her voice, which she used to exquisite effect.
